Background: Insect-transmitted diseases remain a major source of illness and death worldwide. Mosquitoes alone transmit diseases in more than 700 million people annually. The aim of the work: is to perform phytochemical screening tests and to investigate the insecticidal effects of different extracts of the aerial parts of Acacia modesta (A. modesta) Wall. on adult Culex pipiens (Cx. pipiens) mosquito. Materials and methods: Different A. modesta Wall. extracts were bioassayed against adult Cx. Pipiens mosquito to estimate their insecticidal effects. Three different extracts of A. modesta Wall. aerial parts were prepared (distilled water, ethanol and acetone extracts). Different concentration for each prepared extract were tested for their insecticidal activity as well as different duration of exposure e.g. one hour, 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours were also performed. Results: The efficacy of these extracts varies according to type of solvent used, concentration of extract and duration of exposure. With continuous exposure for 24 hrs; efficacy of A. modesta Wall. extract was elevated from 62–91% in the same manner. Expanding the exposure for 48 hrs; show continuous elevation up to 90–100 %. Meanwhile, the highest concentration of the tested plant extracted in acetone is one third (100 mg/ml) compared to other solvents (300 mg/ml), results showed that using acetone as a solvent is better than either distilled water or ethanol for its insecticidal activity. Conclusion: It was evident from the results that the plant is a potential source of botanical insecticides against adult Cx. pipiens mosquitoes and their toxic effects are time and concentration dependent. Moreover, phytochemical screening for the aerial parts of A. modesta Wall. resulted in the identification of carbohydrates and/or glycosides, tannins, flavonoids , unsaturated sterols and/or triterpens as well as saponins.

Crassulaceae (chemistry and pharmacology) - A review - 01/1

Family Crassulaceae comprises approximately 1410 species which are commonly used for ornamental purposes. And nowadays showed many medicinal values. Recently, it has had been reported that several species of the family possess certain biological and pharmacological activities as: anti-oxidant, antihyperglycemic, antimicrobial, antiulcerogenic, cytotoxic/anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive activity, hepatoprotective, analgesic, anti-arthritic, anti-malarial, antimutagenic, insecticidal, antithrombolytic, antihypertensive and myometrial activities. Earlier studies on different Crassulaceae plants have reported the isolation of flavonoids, sterols, ascorbic acid, trace elements, organic acids, hydrocarbons, triterpenoids, phenolic components and bufadienolides. This review contains an overview on the chemistry and pharmacological activities of Family Crassulaceae.

Difference in chemical composition and antimicrobial activity ofThymus capitatus L. essential oil at different altitudes - 01/0

The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of different altitude on the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil prepared from wild Libyan growing Thymus capitatus L. aerial parts collected from Al-Jabal Akhdar. Two different altitudes were chosen represented by Abu-Draa (650 m above the see level) and Sidi Al-Hamey (850 m above the see level). This study concerned with both qualitative and quantitative variations. The percentage yield for T. capitatus essential oils yield were 1.5% and 1.04% for both Abu-Draa and Sidi Al-Hamry respectively. GC/MS analysis for each essential oil revealed the identification of 14 volatile components corresponding to 91.99% from Abu-Draa and 23 compounds corresponding to 96.54% from Sidi Al-Hamrey. Carvcrol was the major volatile component present in both essential oils of Abu-Draa and Sidi Al-Hamrey regions (58.56% and 24.28% respectively). The second major volatile compound present in the essential oil prepared from Abu-Draa is b-caryophyllene (7.41%) followed by its oxide (6.26%); on the other hand Gamma-terpinene is the second major volatile compound present in Sidi Alhamry prepared oil (16.18%) followed by caryophyllene oxide (10.43%). Both phenolic and phenolic ethers are dominated in both examined oils (62.51, 33.74% respectively) resulting in a great antimicrobial activity for both of them which is more prominent in that oil prepared from the low altitude Abu-draa.

Chemical Profile and Biological Activity of Casimiroa Edulis Non-EdibleFruit's parts - 01/1

Purpose: the non-edible fruit parts of Casimiroa edulis Llave et were evaluated for their active constituents and their potential as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity. Methods: Fruits peel (FP) and seeds kernel (SK) of Casimiroa edulis Llave et Lex. were extracted successively with hexane and then methanol. Fatty acids were prepared from hexane extracts and identified by GC. Total flavonoid, phenolic acids and tannins contents in methanol extracts were determined by UV spectrophotometer and identified by HPLC. Antioxidant, invitro anti-inflammatory activity and antitumor effect against Caco-2 cell line were determined . Results: GC analysis of hexane extracts showed that oleic acid (47.00%) was the major unsaturated fatty acids in both extracts while lignoceric acid (15.49%) is the most abundant saturated fatty acid in (FP). Total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents in (FP) & (SK) methanol extracts were; 37.5±1.5, 10.79±0.66 and 22.28±0.23 for (FP); 53.5±1.5mg/g, 14.44±0.32 mg/g; and 53.73±3.58 mg/g for (SK) respectively. HPLC analysis of methanol extract revealed that; the major phenolic compound was pyrogallol in (FP) and phydroxybenzoic acid in (SK), the major flavonoid was luteolin 6-arabinose-8-glucose in (FP) and acacetin in (SK). Conclusion: This study showed that non-edible parts of C. edulis fruit is a rich source of different phenolic compounds and fatty acids which has great antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities; that could be used as a natural source in pharmaceutical industry.

Antioxidant, Cytotoxic and Antimicrobial Activities of Crude and Green Synthesized Silver nanoparticles Extract of Crataegus sinaics Boiss.leaves - 01/0

Bio-green synthesis of silver nano particles of the crude extract of Crataegus sinaica leaves was carried out; characterizations using UV/Vis spectrophotometry, Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope and FT-IR spectrometry, the gained nanoparticles were predominantly spherical with an average size of 30 nm. The nano particles′ extract (CSAgNPs) showed more total phenol, flavonoid, hydrolysable tannin and proanthocyanidin contents (203.75±0.50 mg GAE g-1, 77.80±0.70 mg QE g-1, 117.20±1.60 mg TAE g-1, 0.510±0.011 mg CE g-1 & 190.28±0.70 mg GAE g-1, 54.48±0.9 mg QE g-1, 97.15±1.3 mg TAE g-1 & 0.187 ±0.002 mg CE g-1), consequently more significant antioxidant potentials (57.15±0.59, 42.45±0.38 & 91.15±0.37, 79.88± 0.56%) at 500 and 1000 μg ml-1 compared to crude extract. Screening of cytotoxic activity towards HEP-G2, HCT-116 and MCV-7 using Cisplatin as standard revealed that nanoparticles′ extract exhibited more significant potency expressed as reduction of IC50 (10.20, 29.50 & 1.72) compared to crude extract (23.80, 41.80 & 5.58 μg). Antimicrobial studies revealed that the nanoparticulated extract exhibited more significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aurous, Bacillus subtilis & Escherichia coli but devoid of activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared to Gentamycin, also nanoparticulated extract exhibited more antifungal activity against Candida albicans but devoid of activity against Aspergillus niger compared to Ketoconazole.

Lipid profile and biological activity of different extracts of Stapelia hirsuta L. - 01/0

Background: Stapelia hirsuta L. is a succulent ornamental plant. This study was aimed to investigate the lipid profile of its aerial parts in addition to, certain bioactivities of the different fractions obtained from its total alcohol extract which may be useful to scientists and scholars working in the field of pharmacology and therapeutics to develop evidence based alternative medicines. Method: Four main compounds were isolated from the n-hexane extract of Stapelia hirsute L. GLC analysis of the unsaponifiable matters (USM) and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were carried out. The total alcohol extract and its different fractions were subjected to certain biological screening including the following :LD50, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, anticonvulsant, anti-ulcerogenic and antimicrobial activities. Results and conclusion: b-amyrin (1), lupeol (2), a-amyrin (3) and b-sitosterol (4) were isolated from the n-hexane extract. GLC analysis of (USM) and (FAME) revealed that, squalene, a-amyrin and b-sitosterol are the major hydrocarbon, triterpene and sterol respectively. The percentages of the unsaturated and saturated fatty acids are 40.8% and 48% respectively. Caproic acid (26.6%) was the major fatty acid and stearic (1.2%) being the minor one. Biological screening of the different extracts and fractions were carried out and significant results were obtained.

Antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of some Libyan medicinal plants - 01/0

The total alcoholic extracts prepared from the aerial parts of Capparis spinosa L., Juniperus phoenicea, Ruta graveolanse and Artimisia herba alba growing in Al-jabal Al-akhdar in Libya showed a significant cytotoxic activity against both breast and colon cell lines MCF-7 and HCT-116 as well as a significant antibacterial activity against some tested Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. At the same time, preliminary photochemical screening of their aerial parts was carried out. This study was undertaken to justify the beneficial medicinal uses of these studied plants and their alcoholic extracts.
